The Carrera de Tacones started in the 1980s in a downtown bar as a joke between friends — a bet among drag queens and cross-dressers to see who could run best in heels. It quickly spilled out onto the street and became official. Today it attracts participants from all over Spain and abroad. The event is organized by the city council, but it retains the spirit of a neighborhood party that grew beyond expectations.
The Carrera de Tacones (High Heel Race) is the most accessible and wildest event of Carnival. The concept is simple: 100 meters in high heels, in Carnival costume, on Calle Castillo in downtown Santa Cruz. Anyone can sign up — men, women, locals, tourists, from age 16 and up.
What makes this event irresistible: the joyful absurdity of the race, the spectacular falls, the outrageous costumes, and the loud cheering of a festive crowd. It's free, open to everyone, and perfectly captures the spirit of Tenerife's Carnival: festive, inclusive, and fun.
How to participate
Registration on the morning of the event (check if online registration is available on the official program). Bring your heels (minimum 7 cm required) and your best costume. There are separate categories: men, women, drag performers. Winners receive a trophy and prizes. Heels are sometimes available to borrow on-site.
Even if you don't run, come and watch! Calle Castillo transforms into a huge street party. Local participants train seriously. Arrive 1 hour early to find a spot on the sidewalks.
To participate: choose heels with a wide platform rather than thin stilettos — you'll maintain your balance better over the distance without twisting your ankle on the cobblestones of Calle Castillo.
