The Gala Reina is the most glamorous event of Tenerife's Carnival. Candidates compete for the title of Carnival Queen by parading in extraordinary costumes — some weighing up to 100 kg, standing 5 meters tall and requiring 3 to 6 months of creation with entire teams of seamstresses. Each costume is a unique work of art: feathers, LED lights, steel structures — sometimes with motors to move certain elements — and integrated wheels to allow the candidate to move around.
These dresses are not garments. They are ephemeral structures that cost tens of thousands of euros and require as much technical expertise as a parade float. Once the Gala is over, they are dismantled or briefly displayed before ending up in a warehouse.
The candidate crowned Carnival Queen represents the city throughout the entire festival.
- Adult Gala — the main evening, broadcast live on television
- Gala Reina Infantil — a few days earlier, for girls aged 6 to 12
How a Candidate Becomes Queen
Candidates often represent a neighborhood, association or local sponsor. Selection happens months in advance, then rehearsals begin for walking, posture and presentation — they literally learn to carry these structures without falling. The title changes the life of a Tenerife family: neighborhood pride, invitations for a year, visibility. Some previous Queens have gone on to become politicians or journalists.
Book your seats as soon as tickets go on sale — the Recinto Ferial fills up weeks in advance. If you can't find tickets, giant screen broadcasts are organized at Plaza de España. The Gala lasts 4 to 5 hours: bring snacks.
If you know a candidate, go watch her parade through the neighborhoods before the Gala: the atmosphere is more intimate and you'll better understand what it means.
