Los Gigantes takes its name from the volcanic cliffs that dominate it: 600 meters of black rock plunging vertically straight into the Atlantic. One of the most dramatic landscapes in the Canaries. The resort itself is calm and family-friendly, with a lively marina where whale and dolphin excursions depart, the best in Tenerife.
Good to know: Los Gigantes is the ideal base for exploring the west of the island. Masca (30 min), Garachico (45 min), Santiago del Teide (20 min) are all easily accessible.
Between Los Gigantes and La Gomera, deep waters and currents create a permanent habitat for sperm whales, pilot whales, common dolphins, spotted dolphins, and bottlenose dolphins. No seasonal migration: they live here year-round thanks to underwater canyons and upwelling that brings nutrients. Depending on the season, you see more dolphins in groups or solitary sperm whales coming up to breathe. To choose a serious tour, look at the boat size (smaller is better for approaching without disturbing), the presence of hydrophones to listen to clicks, and a guide who knows the approach rules. Large commercial operations with 100 people on board venture farther and stress the animals more.
The tip: Choose a morning departure with a small sailboat or catamaran that leaves early. Cetaceans are more active and there are fewer boats at the same time.
The Los Gigantes cliffs reach 600 meters of nearly vertical black basalt. They are the collapsed edge of the ancient Teide caldera that opened toward the sea hundreds of thousands of years ago. The layers of different colors tell the story of ancient flows and pauses between eruptions. At the base, the turquoise water comes from great depth and the absence of sand or sediments. Kayakers know the small hidden coves where you can snorkel among the rocks and see fish sheltering in the cracks. The contrast between the black of the rock and the blue of the water is striking.
The tip: Rent a kayak early in the morning from Playa de los Guíos and follow the base of the cliffs toward the north. You'll see the caves and layer colors up close without anyone else around.
