Tenerife enjoys one of Europe's most pleasant subtropical climates, with an average annual temperature of 22 °C. The Teide volcano acts as a natural barrier, meaning conditions vary significantly by zone: the South is generally sunny even when clouds cover the North.
Sea: Sea temperature: between 19 °C in January and 24 °C in September, swimming is comfortable year-round. TenerifePulse displays sea temperature and conditions live via Open-Meteo Marine data, updated twice daily.
UV: UV index: even in winter, UV can reach 6–7 (high). In summer it regularly exceeds 9. SPF 50+ sunscreen is recommended year-round, especially between 12:00 and 16:00.
Swim risk: Swim risk: based on wave height. When the sea is rough (red flag on the beach), swimming is forbidden even if the sky looks clear. TenerifePulse calculates this risk in real time from marine weather data (swell height, direction) combined with AEMET atmospheric forecasts.
TenerifePulse shows live Tenerife weather using AEMET data (Spain's national weather agency), updated twice daily (morning and afternoon). You can check temperature, wind and swim risk for each of the 7 island zones: South, North, East, West, North-East, North-West and Centre.
Tenerife enjoys a pleasant subtropical climate year-round. In winter (December–February), temperatures range from 17 to 23 °C in the South, the sunniest zone. The North can be cloudier and wetter. The sea stays around 20 °C, making swimming possible year-round.
Swimming is not advised when wave height exceeds 1.5 m (rough sea, red flag). TenerifePulse calculates swim risk in real time from marine data: 'Calm' (< 0.5 m), 'Moderate' (0.5–1.5 m), 'Rough' (> 1.5 m). Always check the flag on the beach.
The South of Tenerife (Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, Las Américas) is generally the sunniest zone, sheltered from clouds by the Teide volcano. When the North is overcast, the South often stays sunny. It is the recommended zone to maximise beach days.
Find the ideal beach based on current weather: golden sand, black volcanic sand or natural pools.
