The Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago just a few hours' flight from France, Belgium, or Switzerland, attract thousands of French speakers each year seeking sunshine, nature, and authenticity. With seven main islands, the choice can feel overwhelming. Tenerife, the largest and most varied, positions itself as the ideal base for most travelers who want to combine relaxation and discovery without falling into mass tourism.
Each island has a strong personality:
As a family: Tenerife offers protected beaches like Las Teresitas and adapted parks (Loro Parque, Siam Park). Gran Canaria works too, but its dunes can be less convenient with young children.
As a couple: the coves of Anaga or the bodegas of La Orotava in Tenerife offer a more intimate setting than the large resorts of Gran Canaria. La Gomera is perfect for a romantic and disconnected getaway.
Experienced hikers: La Palma and La Gomera offer more demanding trails. But Tenerife remains the most convenient starting point thanks to its bus and ferry network to the other islands.
Pure relaxation: Fuerteventura with its nearly endless beaches of golden sand. But expect little relief, few lively villages, and sometimes intense wind.
The answer comes down to three concrete points.
Geographic diversity: in less than an hour, you go from the black sand of the south to the laurel forests of the north or the peaks of Teide at 3,718 m. Few European islands offer this range in such a short distance.
Accessibility: two international airports (Tenerife South and Tenerife North) welcome direct flights from Paris, Lyon, Brussels, Geneva, and Montreal. Low-cost connections are plentiful, making flights cheaper than to smaller islands.
Balance of services and authenticity: supermarkets, modern hospitals, well-maintained roads — without sacrificing family guachinches, wild coves, or village markets.
Connections are simple and affordable. Ferries (Fred Olsen or Naviera Armas) connect Los Cristianos or Santa Cruz to:
Inter-island flights with Binter or Canary Fly last 20 to 50 minutes and often cost less than €50. Check schedules on official websites as they vary by season.
Many travelers based in Tenerife make one or two day trips to La Gomera or Lanzarote without changing accommodation — this is the most comfortable strategy.
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are more arid and sometimes windy in winter; hikes there are more monotonous. La Palma and El Hierro offer spectacular nature but have fewer restaurants and evening activities. Gran Canaria is more urban, which appeals to some or not, depending on taste.
Tenerife avoids extremes: neither too small nor too built-up. This is its main advantage.
One week: stay in Tenerife and take a day trip to La Gomera or Gran Canaria. This is enough to see the essentials of the island.
Two weeks: combine Tenerife (10 days) with La Palma or La Gomera (4-5 days). The change of atmosphere is radical and enriching.
One month: explore 3 or 4 islands at your own pace. Plan flexible accommodations as ferries can be full during peak season.
