Renting a car remains the most convenient way to discover Tenerife away from the tourist trails, especially to reach secret coves or hiking paths. However, this step requires serious preparation. We give you here general and practical advice, without recommending any specific company, in order to minimize risks and unpleasant surprises.
For the south and main roads, a small city car is sufficient. For the north (Anaga, La Orotava) or mountain roads, opt for a higher category with good ground clearance. 4x4s are not necessary except for a few very specific tracks. Always verify that the vehicle is authorized on the roads of Teide national park.
A valid European driving license is sufficient for EU citizens. Verify that your contract includes comprehensive insurance with no excess (or with very low excess). Read carefully the clauses on mileage, fuel policy (full/full mandatory) and abandonment fees if you return the car to a different airport. Take detailed photos of the vehicle before leaving, including underneath the chassis and on the tires.
Some agencies offer very cheap "basic" insurance then try to sell you additional insurance on site. Others charge cleaning fees or for scratches already present. The simple rule: politely refuse any additional insurance on the day of pickup and insist that the vehicle's condition be noted in writing.
The narrow and winding roads of Anaga (TF-12 and TF-13) require concentration. The road to Masca is spectacular but very narrow; it's better not to take it late in the day. In the south, the TF-1 is fast but often congested during peak hours. In case of rain (rare but possible in the north), roads become slippery due to volcanic sand.
The airports (Tenerife South and Tenerife North) offer the most choice. Pickup at the south airport is convenient for those arriving directly in the south. Check the opening hours of agencies: some close early in the evening.
This guide remains intentionally general to avoid any personalized advice. Each situation is different and contractual terms evolve. We recommend comparing offers on independent platforms and reading recent reviews before any reservation.
