What to do in Tenerife when it rains? 8 ideas + north/south tip

First check the weather by zone: the north of Tenerife can get overcast quickly in winter while the south often remains sunny. The simplest tip is to take TF-1 south if the clouds settle over Puerto de la Cruz or Santa Cruz. But when the rain affects the entire island (which is rare), here are eight alternatives so as not to waste a day.

1. Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre (Santa Cruz)

Housed in a former colonial hospital, this museum houses Guanche mummies (the island's prehistoric inhabitants), geological collections and interactive exhibits on local flora and fauna. Entrance around €5, closed on Monday. Allow 2 hours minimum.

2. Loro Parque (Puerto de la Cruz)

Approximately 80% of facilities are covered or sheltered. The animal shows take place under cover and children can spend the day without getting wet. Ideal even in gray weather. Check the show times at the entrance to plan your visit.

3. Historic Center of La Laguna

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, La Laguna can be visited on foot under the arcades. Its churches, museums and colonial houses allow you to stay dry while discovering 16th century architecture. The Mercado Municipal offers covered local products.

4. La Laguna covered market

The stalls selling Canarian cheeses, wines, vegetables and crafts are sheltered. Perfect for strolling for an hour or two while tasting local products at low prices.

5. Bodegas Monje (El Sauzal)

This bodega offers tours and tastings in its modern facilities with ocean views. Reservations recommended on weekends. The visit lasts approximately 1 hour 30 minutes and ends with a tasting of 3 to 5 local wines. Price around €15-20 per person.

6. Pueblo Chico (La Orotava)

This miniature park reproduces the emblematic landscapes and monuments of the Canary Islands in models. Partially covered, ideal with children aged 5 to 12. Entrance around €10.

7. Hammam or spa (Costa Adeje)

Several establishments such as the Aqua Club Termal in Costa Adeje have indoor thermal spaces. Hot/cold/steam bath circuit. Reservation required. Allow €25-40 depending on the options chosen.

8. Shopping and cinema (Santa Cruz or Los Cristianos)

The CC Las Arenas shopping center in Santa Cruz houses a multiplex cinema, shops and restaurants. In the south, the centers of Los Cristianos or Playa de las Américas offer similar options. Some films are broadcast in the original version with subtitles; check the sessions in original version.

The north, however, remains culturally richer when the weather turns bad. If you are stuck in the rain in the south, keep in mind that Teide may be in the clouds but remains accessible by cable car up to a certain altitude.
