Whale watching is one of the most popular activities in Tenerife. The port of Los Gigantes, in the west of the island, provides direct access to the canal between Tenerife and La Gomera, one of the areas richest in marine life in the North Atlantic. This guide answers the concrete questions of tourists staying in the south: is it really worth it, what species to see, how to choose your trip.
The Tenerife-La Gomera Canal is home to a resident population of cetaceans — not migrating passage animals, but individuals that live here permanently. This is what sets Los Gigantes apart from the majority of whale watching destinations: sightings are reliable all year round.
The underwater relief and channel currents create favorable feeding conditions, which explains this sedentary lifestyle. The bottom drops quickly to several hundred meters a few kilometers from the port.
If you are planning a full day, the port of Los Gigantes is also the arrival point of the return boat for the Barranco de Masca hike — two activities in the same day or on two consecutive days.
The tropical pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus, called calderón in Spanish) and the bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are resident and observed during the vast majority of well-led outings.
Occasional species: common dolphin, Atlantic spotted dolphin, sperm whale. Orcas remain rare and more likely in spring.
Les compagnies sérieuses rappellent que les animaux sauvages ne sont jamais garantis à 100 %. In practice, leaving without seeing any cetaceans is very unusual in this area - but it does exist, especially in bad seas.
The Cabildo de Tenerife imposes a minimum distance of 60 m from cetaceans and the stopping of engines in the presence of pilot whales. Les compagnies qui ne respectent pas ces règles perturbent les animaux et risquent des amendes.
Look for the Turismo Sostenible label or affiliation with FIRMM (Foundation for Information and Research on Marine Mammals). These organizations train the crews and contribute to the scientific monitoring of populations.
Be wary of operators who promise “guaranteed encounters” or clearly come too close. A good operator briefs passengers on the rules and does not hesitate to modify the exit if the weather conditions deteriorate.
The outings operate all year round thanks to the resident population. The most comfortable period is from March to October, with generally calmer seas and better light conditions.
Morning outings (departure 9 a.m.-10 a.m.): sea often calmer, favorable light for photos. Afternoon (departure 1 p.m.-2 p.m.): more marked heat but relaxed evening.
In winter, the canal can be choppy — check the sea weather conditions the day before. Serious companies cancel or postpone if the sea is bad.
Duration: 2 hours to 3 hours depending on the formula. Price: €30-45 (large catamaran), €50-80 (small boat), €150+ (semi-rigid or private). Book directly with companies rather than via intermediary platforms which add a commission.
Los Gigantes Port: arrive 20-30 minutes before departure. Toilets and cafes nearby.
Seasickness: catamarans are the most stable. If you are sensitive, take an anti-nausea medication 1 hour before and stay in the center of the boat, at water level.
Children: accepted from 3-4 years old on most outings. Check the age requirements according to the company and the type of boat.
