The plátano canario is not just any banana. Shorter, sweeter, and more fragrant than imported bananas — Canarians defend it with pride and a protected designation of origin.
Introduced in the 19th century as a replacement for cochineal, a crop too vulnerable to market crises.
The banana quickly established itself in the northern valleys: rich volcanic soil, humid trade winds, mild temperatures year-round. A rare combination.
The difference is real and immediately noticeable:
- Smaller: 10-15 cm compared to 20 cm for Cavendish
- Sweeter: naturally higher sugar content at maturity
- Thinner skin: black spots = sign of ripeness, not deterioration
- Complex flavor: fruity notes, slightly tangy aftertaste
