Santiago del Teide is the village that everyone drives through without stopping. The road to Masca passes through here, so tourists speed up — and they miss one of the most peaceful places on the island. At 930 meters altitude, the air is fresh, the streets are empty, and the terraces on the square overlook the mountains without asking for anything. In January-February, almond blossoms blanket the hills in white and pink — it's the best season, and almost no one knows about it.
A central square with the Parroquia de San Fernando church (17th century), a bar serving café con leche for €1.20 and fresh cheese tapas, and an unobstructed view of the Teno massif. The streets are clean and quiet, and the Canarian houses with wooden balconies set the tone. No souvenir shops, no tourist restaurants — just mountain village life at 930 meters. The Sunday morning market (Mercadillo Municipal) sells local goat cheese, tajinaste honey, and almonds — arrive before 11am, everything sells out fast.
Santiago del Teide is the official starting point of the TF-436 towards Masca — the 9 km most spectacular (and most winding) stretch of Tenerife. Fill up on gas here: it's the last station before Masca and Buenavista. At the pass at 1,000 m, a viewpoint offers the first plunging view of the village of Masca perched between two cliffs. Rental car clutches suffer on the hairpin turns — take your time, let the buses pass, and enjoy the show.
