Perched at an altitude of 770 m on a plateau of the Teno massif, a dozen kilometers from Buenavista del Norte, Teno Alto is one of the most isolated hamlets in Tenerife. No beach or tourist guachinche here: stone houses with tiled roofs, goats grazing between the low walls, and a silence that only the wind breaks. The plateau is worth the stop for its own sake, goat farming still shapes the landscape on a daily basis, and also serves as a base for the Camino del Risco towards Buenavista and the ridge hikes towards Masca.
The tip: The few ventas in the hamlet sell queso de cabra made on site. Stop before or after the hike: this cheese does not travel to the south of the island.
The Teno massif, in the northwest of Tenerife, is among the oldest on the island, between 6 and 8 million years old. The Teno Rural Park which encompasses it protects dizzying cliffs, deep gorges (Masca) and high altitude hamlets like this one, completely removed from southern tourism.
Teno Alto administratively depends on Buenavista del Norte, but remains separated from the city center by a winding mountain road. It is reached by El Palmar or by the track that runs along the ridge from Masca, two routes which already announce the isolation of the place.
The activity on the plateau revolves almost entirely around goat farming. The herds graze freely between plots demarcated by dry stone walls, guarded by the last shepherds in the area. The resulting queso de cabra, sometimes matured, sometimes fresh, can be enjoyed on site in two or three traditional ventas, at prices that are out of all proportion to those charged in tourist areas.
It is also the opportunity to taste carne de cabra (goat in sauce), a rarer dish that is difficult to find elsewhere on the island.
The Camino del Risco starts from the Plaza de Los Bailaderos, in the heart of the hamlet. It is the old mule track (marked PR-TF 58) which descends towards Buenavista: approximately 3.5 km, 650 m difference in altitude, intermediate level. Common mistake: this is not the Punta de Teno lighthouse trail. For the tip, we reach Buenavista then bus 369 (or another PR), respecting the regulated access.
Another option, more demanding: the ridge towards Masca, via the Mirador de Cherfe and the Altos de Baracán. Allow half a day, irregular terrain exposed to the wind, panorama on both sides of the massif.
Access: By the road that goes up from El Palmar (to the west) or from Buenavista del Norte via Las Portelas. Sharp turns, car required, no regular bus line to the hamlet.
Parking: Limited spaces on the side of the road at the entrance to the hamlet; avoid blocking agricultural passages.
To combine: Buenavista del Norte (descent of Risco or road) · Punta de Teno (bus 369 or taxi from Buenavista) · Masca (ridge or TF-436 via Santiago del Teide) · Mirador de Cherfe.
Equipment: Frequent wind and cooler temperature than at the seaside even in summer; good shoes for the trails around the hamlet.
